We live in a world where sharing intimate details of our lives publicly through social media is normal, yet sharing our true thoughts and emotions with intimates is not. 1 in 5 people are keeping major secrets from their partners, and many more feel they cannot share their secrets - fantasies, problems, mistakes - for fear of jeopardising their relationships.
The mission of the Unspoken Lies project is to inspire people to reconsider what emotional honesty means to them, and to create a safe private space for them to share their own unspoken lie with a confidant.
The project was written and produced by O Ma Cassé, in collaboration with a team of artists from China, U.S.A and the UK.
The Unspoken Lies EP is a four-track story of emotional dishonesty, darkness, and transformation, taking the audience on a musical journey inside themselves.
The EP is sung (and rapped) in both English and Mandarin, a lyrical play on the idea of a "communication barrier" in relationships. Stylistically, it draws from downtempo, techno, trap, breakbeat, neo-soul, and experimental electronic music.
The EP is available on all global streaming platforms, as well as Chinese platforms QQ Music and Netease Music. The EP is also available on vinyl - please use the form at the bottom of the page to request one.
We all know social media is a dogfight for attention, but it is also a key battleground for emotional honesty.
With the goal of showing people a new side of social media - a side rooted in honesty and openness - we launched social campaigns and challenges in Instagram and WeChat. The challenges called people to share an unspoken lie with a confidant and to then be that same set of ears for their own friends.
THE LIVE EVENT
The campaign was waged in the digital space, but we celebrated it on-the-ground. To honour the emotional honesty of everyone who engaged in the project online, we hosted an Unspoken Lies EP release party at Elevator, Shanghai on July 29th 2020.
The event featured a live performance of the whole EP, original projected animations, and art installations enabling the audience to once again share their unspoken lies in private.
All attendees received a personalised animated invite.
